HI 大家好

小弟有興趣申請貴校BME博士班，有個問題想請教，希望了解系所生態的同學們可以幫我，
我想問系上的對學生的funding規劃是如何，我聽說各校各系都不同，有的事全給，有的是要找老師SUPPORT，有的是自己想辦法，不知道貴校BME是如何?
另外，每學期的學費是全抵 還是有DIFFERENCE，如果你有TA GA RA，那一個月大約有多少錢可以領??

New dean said he would support the new PhDs which means you don't have to pay anything, but the reality is, you can't get support if your professor doen't have fundings.

We only have TAs and RAs, stipends for them are 23500/yr, but you need to pay around 1000/yr for the insurance.

The very first thing you have to make sure is that you find a professor who accept you as his/her student. If your professor has money, he/she sould give you a RA position (professor pays you from his/her own grant); if not, but he/she holds an available TA position, you should be a TA (department pays you). The worst case is that your professor has neither RA nor TA position for you, which means you won't get no money at all and you still have to pay your tuition.

Generally, if you have RA or TA assistantship, the tuition is completely waived. Please be adviced that usually the PhD students who passed the qualify exam will be prior considered as a TA.

Right now the new dean is promising to pay new enrolled PhD students the same amount as the estimated living expense showing on the I-20, which means the new PhD students enrolled in this fall will get around $24800/yr (before tax). You still have to pay $1000 for health insurance (college covers the rest) and some small amount fees.

I got the message from the dean last week. He say every PhD student is fully covered, but it seems that students are stilled supported by his/her adviser and not by the department based on your understanding.

I also know it is a hard time to the States and many schools or departments are running out of budget or funding so how's the faculties in BME and the BME department? Are they way from the economy crises? Does any BME PhD student have to find his funding support from other department?

dont quiet understand your question. but if you wana know you can have the scholarship, my suggestion is to contact the department directly. They will tell you if you can get the scholarship or not.

我想你想問的問題就是'我到底會不會有錢'
關於這問題
因為每個人做的東西不同
可以選擇的教授也不同
在可以選擇的教授中有的有錢 有的沒有錢
所以你的問題還是首先要找到一個願意收你當學生又有錢的教授

目前全美私立學校幾乎都在虧錢
UM也在砍預算
工學院的預算也被砍了
但是lab的設施是跟老闆的grant有關
所以假如你老闆有錢
研究上是不會有什麼影響的
該買的儀器照買
學生的薪水也照付

如果你找不到有錢的老闆
也是有一兩位學生因為老闆沒有錢而被迫換老闆換題目
不過他們的老闆都是醫學院的教授而不是BME的教授
所以連TA的位置都無法爭取
這種事情都很難說的

不過可以跟你保證的是
假如你被系上accepted但是沒有找到老闆
基本上只有很低的機會可以有TA
因為新學生沒有通過資格考
TA都是給較資深的博士生做
另一個原因是基本上TA的名額都滿了

通常老闆沒有錢也不會答應收學生
Dean的保證只是提高已經有funding的學生可以拿那麼多錢
老闆funding沒有那麼高就由工學院補差額

謝謝您的熱心回覆，
因為我有兩個同學，一個系上保證免費到畢業，一個天天擔心老闆沒錢，
所以我才想問問看系上與系上教授的狀況作為申請考量，
本以為DEAN的回信，讓我覺得貴系偏向我第一個同學的狀況，
現在看起來是比較偏向第二個狀況，也就是說有沒有錢還是得看老闆~

另外我想要問的事，BME系和學生在U of M 算活躍ㄇ?
BME算是很大範圍的領域，貴系有沒有一個大的研究方向和目標?
比如說多數教授目前專研在哪方面ㄉ?

UM有114 bachelor's, 104 master's, 57 doctoral and four professional areas of study. 請問你活躍的定義是什麼??
PhD學生又不會搞系學會啦啦隊有的沒的
請問做研究跟系上學生活不活躍有什麼關係??

教授作什麼領域是你自己應該要去看的

這種很空洞不著邊際的問題叫人家很難回答

小弟說"活躍" 並非去搞捨麼啦啦隊，這樣豈非太不敬業
我知道大家都是認真在課業上阿，所以想要知道貴系學術上 是不是算是UM的強項
有沒有捨麼地方與眾不同ㄉ

我想我最後一個問題是想要知道目前貴系的強打是哪個領域，
並不是想問每個教授在作捨麼~我想我讀過的資料 可能看不出整體性也並不會比各位在校學長姐來得那樣清楚

OK 這樣我就懂了
關於第一個問題

UM的醫學院算是學校非常重點發展的部分(可以說有點過度發展) 排名也不錯
眼科研究中心Bascom Palmer Eye Institute目前排名全美第一
其他還有Miami Project 是做spinal cord injury
Diabets research center等等
現任校長是柯林頓時期做了八年的Secretary of Health and Human Services
所以主力可以說都是發展醫學院

BME目前是工學院最大的系
很多教授都跟醫學院有緊密合作
所以funding有從NIH NSF 也有從醫學院來的
基本上有一半的研究生是在醫學院的lab做事
上課時才會在本校區出現

至於第二個問題
系上沒有什麼強打或特別往哪一各領域發展
硬要分的話可以說包括做眼睛, tissue engineering, biomechanics, biomaterial, imaging, signal processing等都有.
各教授有自己的領域
沒有像Drxel 全做ultrasound那樣
