U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Tax Filing Requirements and Services for International Students & Scholars
All international students and scholars and their dependents in “F” and “J” immigration status who were present in the U.S. in 2009 have to comply with certain filing requirements with the IRS:
· International students and scholars and their dependents in "F" and "J" immigration status with any U.S. source income in 2009 are required to file a U.S. income tax return (usually Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ) and Form 8843 with the IRS by April 15, 2010.
· International students and scholars and their dependents in "F" and "J" status who spent time in the U.S. in F or J status in 2009 but did not earn any U.S. source income in 2009 are required to file a Form 8843 with the IRS by June 15, 2010.
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) cannot provide tax advice. However, ISSS offers the following two services to assist you with your IRS filing requirements. You can do one of the following:
1. Annual Income Tax Session for Internationals Sponsored by ISSS
The Annual Income Tax Session for UM international students, scholars and their dependents in “F” and “J” immigration status will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2010, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Flamingo Ballrooms A and B, Whitten University Center, 1306 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables Campus. An IRS representative will be available to provide general tax advice and address individual tax questions. While the IRS representative will provide you with general information and guidance in this matter, he will not complete your income tax return for you. Please arrive at the session promptly at 2:00 p.m. and bring with you all relevant documents related to your 2009 income in order to be able to complete your income tax return. Your 2009 income will have been reported to you on one or more of the following forms: W-2, 1042-S, or 1099. Tax forms and publications for the year 2009 will be available at the tax session. Please note that there is limited seating at this event.
NOTE: If you did not earn any U.S. source income in 2009, you should not attend the Annual Income Tax Session. The Annual Income Tax Session is for international students, scholars and dependents who earned U.S. source income in 2009 and who therefore need to file an income tax return.
2. CINTAX Complete International Tax Preparation Software
ISSS has again purchased a license to allow all UM international students, scholars and their dependents in “F” and “J” immigration status to access a very user-friendly online tax preparation program called CINTAX. The program guides you through a series of questions and determines if you are a nonresident for tax purposes. If you are a nonresident for tax purposes, you will be able to use CINTAX to complete and print the required forms and send them to the IRS. You will need an access code to access CINTAX.
NOTE: ISSS will release the CINTAX access code and instructions to you on February 8, 2010. The February 8, 2010 release date will still allow you plenty of time to file your required tax forms by the above-noted April 15, 2010 or June 15, 2010 deadlines.
There are four ways to obtain tax forms and publications:
1. Tax forms and publications for the year 2009 will be available at the Annual Income Tax Session for Internationals.
2. Tax forms for the year 2009 will be available as of February 8, 2010 through CINTAX if you plan to use this online tax preparation program.
3. Tax forms and publications for the year 2009 are available now through the IRS website at www.irs.gov
4. Some tax forms and publications for the year 2009 are available through ISSS, located at 5600 Merrick Drive, 21-F, Coral Gables Campus.
